Admin life never ENDS!

I recently tweeted a few weeks ago the following statement: “Admin life does not end on the last day of school.” A few people responded privately saying, “I am glad I am not the only one that thinks this” or “ That is so true!” I smiled as I read them and replied. There is no such thing as a vacation when taking on a role in admin. We might not be on campus but we are surely working, thinking or reading. I am glad I wasn’t the only one feeling or thinking that way.

No matter how many times I wake up and tell myself that… Today I won’t think of work… I won’t do any work for work. It literally lasts a few hours and then I fail. I dedicated 3 days to finish editing our staff/students handbooks and finished a few things here and there that I wasn’t able to finish before we left for the summer vacation. I finished what was needed to be finished and then sent emails to notify them.

I am in this book study/chat with about 14 different ladies reading “The Power of Moments”. After each chapter we are sent a question to discuss for the next few days. Being in this group and listening to their answers gave me some ideas of what we can do in ES. It’s been a wonderful experience so far. At first I was nervous but because they are all wonderful it’s hard to be shy around them. After reading the first two chapters it got me thinking of how we can define moments in school to ensure that we make every minute count, turning pits into peaks. I want to start this from day 1 of school for both students and staff. How can we make it different? More lively? How can we make it a memorable first day for both students and staff? I have been thinking about it for a few weeks and when an idea came to me I quickly emailed my new principal and new KG AP to get their feedback. They were both excited and on board. I can’t wait to tell the staff and see how it goes. “The Power of Moments” is a wonderful book so far and it got me thinking about a lot of things. I enjoy the questions and discussions that come after each chapter.

Here I thought that summer vacation meant that I would have a proper break instead, my mind doesn’t stop racing from idea to idea and doesn’t know how to switch off. Is that wrong? If I am not reading after my kids sleep, I am thinking of what we can do with staff and students. Life as an admin truly does not end on the last day of school.
