A simple yet powerful question.

A few days ago after school I was sitting at my desk and a staff member stopped by and asked, “How was your day?” I was so focused on the screen and thinking of what I had to finish that when I looked up at her I didn’t know how to answer. It took me a few seconds to understand what she was asking. Finally I answered back by saying “Come again? Sorry I was so focused on the screen I didn’t quite hear you.”

She looked at me and said “Just asked how was your day?” I thought to myself oh wow, she’s really asking about my day! Isn’t it supposed to be me asking her about her day? WOAH! I’ll be honest, I am not used to someone asking me such a question that when I got asked I didn’t know how to answer. I was speechless but I felt so happy. I simply replied back by saying, “Wow, sorry, I’m not used to being asked that question, normally it’s the other way around. My day was good, I managed to sit for 2 hours in my office and finished my to do list as I simply do not have time during school hours.” She was amazed and said, “oh wow, that’s amazing!! Well, I just wanted to say we appreciate everything you do for us, thank you.” I quickly answered back saying, “for my staff I’ll do anything that will keep them happy and feel supported. My staffs’ wellbeing comes first.” We chatted a bit more and she said, “I’ll leave you to finish, just wanted to see how your day went.” I smiled and thanked her and told her I appreciated it a lot. That simple question honestly put a smile on my face for the rest of the afternoon. It’s funny how a simple question can make someone feel special. It is comforting to know that my staff actually care and appreciate what we do for them. You simply can’t please everyone which is normal.

What makes you feel appreciated by your staff? Does your staff ask you about how you are? Or how your day was?
